Chelsea, 19 May, 1857—
Dear Mrs Procter,
I need not say, I would right gladly if I could: for that is a fact already known to you. But, alas, I am in such a coil of troubles sorrows and travails at this time, I am forced,—till once a certain unblessed job of labour be got off my hands if it ever be got off,—to renounce Dining Enterprises altogether: I have gone out exactly two times within the last year, and in both cases heavy damages were levied in consequence.
Pity me;—and hope of me, if you still can.
