JWC TO LADY STANLEY
5 Cheyne Row Chelsea [ca. 20 December 1857]
Thanks, dear Lady Stanley, for the “glorious opportunity” offered us! I, for one, hoped to avail myself of it; but Mr C's friends “the Destinies” willed otherwise—interfered in the shape of some Northeren1 Cousins who exhausted my strength, still very small, before the appointed hour.
As for my Husband to his shame, or his praise be it spoken, he professed himself more disposed for a call “when you were alone” than when “mixed up with “the Georges.”2
Yours very truly
