The letter is dated in pencil in another hand, presumably Vernon's. He presented to the Athenaeum “my own copy of Carlyle's Friederich II, inside which are attached the originals of his letters to me” (159).

1. Vernon wrote: “Lord Ashburton also put me into correspondence with the famous Thomas Carlyle, who was at that time writing his Life of Frederick the Great, and the result was that Mr. Carlyle had my picture of that King in his house from April 21st, 1858, until February 10th, 1860, and I possess several very interesting letters from him to me about the picture” (Recollections 140–41).

2. Wolseley Hall was 2 mi. NW of Rugeley, Staffordshire; he had leased it from Lord Lichfield, 1856, a year after his marriage (Recollections 136).
