1. TC wrote in his Journal, 15 June: “Finished (last revise just off to Printer) vol. 2 of Friedh; by far the most heartbreaking enterprise I have ever had. Book worth nothing; but faithfully done on my part,—thanks be to Heaven.—Weather is broiling hot: OFF, somewhither!” On 28 Dec., he wrote: “Did get away to Scotland (The Gill) abt the last day of june; staid there, perfectly dormant, in a very sluggish sad way, till end of Augt.” He left on the evening of 23 June.

2. Unexplained. Possibly a truss for TC's hernia; see TC to JWC, 5 July, where he speaks of a bathing “apparatus.”
