The Gill, nr Annan 12 Augt 1858—

Dear Sir,

I return your Proofsheets, after a little inspection. That is certainly a beautiful bit of Psalmody in its kind; a fine pious harmony sounding in it, and good and ingenious ideas, especially one good and greatly true idea, running thro' it. The more people that read it, to my notion the better we shall be. But for a great many reasons it will not suit that I should preface it, or appear upon it at all.

The Annuity matter1 has been settled in a more expeditious way otherwise.

I remain

Yours with many thanks /

T. Carlyle
