Thursday night [23 September 1858]

Oh mercy I am quite distracted— I wrote a letter to be lying for you with the key—when you arrived on Thursday (the day you fixed in your letter.) That letter1 and three others to Jamie Mary and Jean, all in a hurry, were last night instead of being taken to the post, laid on a shelf and—forgotten! they have been found just in time to not miss this nights post also! and the servant who ran with them brings back your note of yesterday (at nine at night); the post-master in spite of repeated directions having sent it off to Tynron!2

He has promised to keep the bag open for this—

Pity me— I meant to have done so nicely—had given Charlotte all possible directing and written to yourself for welcome—and there! Stupid wretches have made a mess of it all!
