1. Charlotte Williams Wynn wrote that she had been “much shocked” reading of Varnhagen von Ense's death, 10 Oct., in the Leader: “I wish to write to his niece as soon as may be, but unfortunately know not the name of the Street in which he lived. … Berlin simply, was sufficient direction on my Letters to him, but it is too vague an address for Miss Assing.” Ludmilla Assing (1821–80); see 33:biographical note.

2. Varnhagen von Ense died while playing chess with his niece in Berlin “in the presence of a large circle of persons of high rank” (Illustrated London News,23 Oct. 1858).

3. “[O]ne comely gentlewoman, well-dressed, of a certain age, went and came observantly, who at length got into speech with Neuberg down below. … ‘Had her Uncle, Catholic Priest of the place, but been here.’ … Fair guide, a black-eyed tall personable woman … clearly the flower of this poor Day for us” (Carlyle, Journey 62). Otherwise unidentified.
