TC TO JAMES BALLANTINE
Chelsea, 22 Novr 1858—
Dear Sir,
It is with reluctance and regret that I have to refuse myself even this second easy honour which you are so kind as offer me!1 I could say why, also;—but will beg you to believe that it is for any reason rather than for want of Scottish Patriotism, or of sensibility to your and the other Gentlemen's kindness;2 and so remain, as always,
Yours with many thanks & good wishes,
T. Carlyle
James Ballantine Esq
