Chelsea, 31 jany, 1859—

Sir,—I am very sorry to hear of your sad circumstances; which are so tragically in contrast with the state of things twenty years ago, as then rumoured of to me!— I was acquainted with your late Cousin;1 and know well what his merits to the London Library were, and how skilful he was in his profession of Bibliographer,—beyond anybody I ever met in Britain or elsewhere.

Out of a small fund at my disposal,2 I enclose you a checque for £5;3 much wishing that it could relieve you more than it will.

I am

Yours with real sympathy /

T. Carlyle
