2. The circular, domed Reading Room, designed by Panizzi and Sydney Smirke (1798–1877; ODNB) and begun in 1854, was opened 18 May 1857; for an illustration and ground plan, see above. It could seat 302 readers and, including the space in adjacent rooms, had storage for 1.5 million vols. TC had intensely disliked the previous arrangements for consulting books in the British Museum; see TC to MAC, 10 Feb. 1849, and TC to AP, 11 April 1853.
