21. Comley Bank, Wednesday [28? November 1827]—

My Dear Sir,

As bad fortune would have it, I was yesterday seized with a cold, which has made such progress over night, that, for the present, in spite of all my anticipations, I find I must keep within doors.

I purpose to do myself the pleasure of waiting on you, the first day this unwelcome companion will let me. [The rest of the manuscript is missing.]

The date is conjectural, but Carlyle in his letter to his father of 22 Dec. indicates that his mother and his sister Jane had come to Edinburgh on Wednesday over two weeks before (5 Dec.) and that he had come down with a cold about a week before that (Wednesday, 28 Nov.).
