Craigenputtoch, Wednesday [23 July 1828]—
My Dear Mother,
I have been purposing to come and see you, long; but am going to accomplish it now. Jane (little Jean) and I will come down, on ponies, possibly about the end of this week, or the beginning of next; in fact so soon as the wet weather seems to give us promise of a tolerable day to ride in. Then shall you hear all our news; and a long string there should be of them by this time. I have scarcely a moment to write in; for Alick is about setting off: but what need is there? Believe that for the present we are all well; that you are very soon to see us (I hope) and hear answers to whatever you can ask. With best love to all, I am always,
