Craigenputtoch, Dumfries, / 22nd December 1829—

My Dear Sir,

I forgot this Review while in Edinburgh; and now take the first opportunity of returning it with best thanks. I think the Editor a man of talent and honest principle, and many of his Contributors very able persons. I wish him all manner of success, so far as he is in the right, which if not throughout, is perhaps nearly as far as any other of our Periodicals at this day.

By and by perhaps I may beg a sight of your Tytler's History,1 which I should like well to read.

Mr Aitken2 (Bell & Bradfute's, Bank-street) forwards all Books for me by regular deliveries.

In great haste, I remain,

My Dear Sir, / Sincerely your's, /

Thomas Carlyle—
