TC TO RICHARD MONCKTON MILNES
Chelsea, Friday [1? June 1838]—
Dear Milnes,
I do design to be of one of your Breakfasts again this season, and see once more with eyes what the felicity of life is; and tomorrow, unless the Destinies withstand, shall be the day. But really, without metaphor, I am horribly beleaguered;—the Gulliver packthreads and pegs,1 aided by native imbecillity, are of an almost maddening nature! Esperons [Let us hope]. Ach Gott [Oh, Lord]!—
Yours ever truly /
T. Carlyle—
