TC TO HENRIETTA MARIA STANLEY
Chelsea, 17th April [1840]
My dear Mrs Stanley,
There is not in the world an exception I should more gladly have made: but the rule is universal, rigorous as Rhadamanthus,1 that I am to dine nowhere till once these unfortunate “Heroes” are out of me,—sometime in the end of May!
I burn Hunt's missive; which would give him great grief, if he knew it.
Yours with many thanks & regrets,
T. Carlyle
