[12 June 1840]

My dear Sir

I have just learned from my Mother now for the first time the deplorable history of her book1 and I write in the greatest haste (being just setting out for the top of St Pauls, of all places in the world) to beg that if her copy cannot be made as good as it ought to have been at first you will return it to Fraser and desire him to send another— We cannot imagine how it has been spoiled—for all the other copies sent to Edinr arrived quite safe— But no matter of the how the business is to get the poor Mother a proper copy so I rely on you to see that she does—

I have not a moment my escort2 being come and waiting for me

Ever affectionately yours

Jane Carlyle
