TC TO LYDIA HOWARD SIGOURNEY

5. Cheyne Row, Chelsea, / 3 Novr, 1840—

My dear Madam,

If you will do us the kindness to come to tea on Thursday Evg. at half past six, my wife will be happy to receive you;1 you will find us most probably alone; and we shall all hope to make a pleasant new acquaintance.

Had I a Fortunatus' Hat, or even any swift wheel-vehicle, I should straightway seek out Denmark Hill,2 and deliver my message in person: but I hope you can dispense with that formality, in favour of a Pedestrian who is rather busy.

Believe me, / My dear Madam, / Yours very truly,

T. Carlyle
