TC TO HENRIETTA MARIA STANLEY
Chelsea, Sunday Mg [23 May? 1841]
Dear Mrs Stanley,
I will come,—tho' professing to go out nowhither at all in these days!
Is it expected that our poor dear Whigs, by this their glorious death-bed repentance, will succeed in reviving the spirit of England in their favour? I begin to find that even I at bottom do heartily wish it. Nay I mean to subscribe half a guinea to the Anti-Corn-Law League, in partial hope of it! To that length will I venture.
Yours very truly always, /
T. Carlyle—
