TC TO RICHARD MONCKTON MILNES
[mid-June 1841]
Dear Milnes,
Here is the tune of Kennst du das Land,1 according to the best version; which I once voluntarily promised to Lady Galway: pray give it to her, with many compliments on my part,—with some echo of a hope that I may one day hear her sing it.
May you be “returned” in your Burgh,2—and hardly any other Tory at all in any Burgh whatsoever! The Corn-Laws seem to me to excel, in glaring insolent fatuity, all that I have ever known any Aristocracy do; except only that of the French Noblesse just before 1789!
Yours, by Heaven's Law, /
T. Carlyle.
