TC TO SIR EDWARD LYTTON BULWER
Chelsea, 30 [31?] jany, 1842—
My dear Sir,
Very unluckily we are already engaged to dine out on Thursday Evening,—and then to go and witness the Loves of Galatea and the Cyclops, as exhibited by Gay, Handel and Macready at Drury-Lane! “Two afflictions, put together, sometimes make a consolation,”1 say the French; and two “consolations” put together vice versâ, as we see!
Yours always truly /
T. Carlyle
