TC TO WILLIAM MAXWELL
Templand, 26 March, 1842—
Dear Sir,
There seems some indispensable necessity for some personal application on my part to the Duke of Buccleuch, before a certain very small transaction now in progress here can complete itself.
Will you have the kindness to transmit the accompanying Statement to His Grace, with your verification of the facts; or your correction, if on any point I have been mistaken.
Mr Moffat and Jardine, with whom Mr Hunter and I conversed at great length today, failed of an arrangement mutually agreeable; whereupon Mr Moffat with great politeness and goodnature withdrew from the negociation.
I remain / Dear Sir / Yours most obedt
T. Carlyle
