Chelsea Monday [27 February 1843]—

Dear Forster,

On Saturday, with a view of conquering the biliary Demon by sheer force, I walked the whole day,—as far as Croydon1 or farther: and have in consequence made myself much worse. Add to which, I had yesterday eleven hours and half of continual talk with individuals of various complexion, to not one of whom did I, or do I for a long time to come, wish to speak one syllable! The result is, that even our early hope for Thursday2 has become impossible at present,—ay de mi!— Eleven hours and a half by the Shrewsbury Clock!3 Yours most afflicted

T. Carlyle
