1. Robert Arbuckle, physician, John Carlyle's longtime friend (see 5:341), who had been in Brazil (see 8:218). Charles Buller, M.P. for Liskeard, opened the debate, 6 April, on systematic colonization, proposing it “as a remedy for the distress of the country,” though the withdrew his motion at the end of the debate, 12:45 A.M.

2. Replying, 5 April, Booth said that he had put their names down “on the Speakers list for tomorrow. … Buller's debate will not commence before 5 [but] I would advise them to be there not long after the opening as there is great eagerness to be present … . The Members list has been full for the last week & more & the Speaker has many more applications than he can comply with.”
