1. Unidentified, but perhaps having to do with German literature. In a note to his Literature of Germany, pbd. in March, Thimm had said: “Mr. Thomas Carlyle's … translations always wear the aspect of importance demanded by the original. … This gentleman, by his finely-written ‘Life of Schiller,’ (in itself perhaps a classical work)—by his sterling English version of Goethe's ‘Wilhelm Meister,’ … and, still more, by his intimate friendship with Goethe himself,—is not only well known to all intelligent Germans, but is viewed by them in the light almost of a countryman” (136–37n).
