TC TO LADY HARRIET BARING

Chelsea, 15 August, 1844

Dear Lady Harriet,

Cannot I learn what has become of that unblessed Cold I left you labouring under? You are very sad in this imagination of mine ever since; you would have been sad enough without the addition of that fiend fastened on you.1

If I fail today in seeing you, as there is little likelihood otherwise, will you not write from Alverstoke: “Farewell; I am going to get well again!”

Yes, get well. Perhaps there are better days coming for us all than we have ever known before, if you were well!—

My blessings on you always.

T. Carlyle.
