TC TO EDWARD FITZGERALD

The Grange, Alresford, Saturday [14 September 1844]

Dear Fitzgerald,

I was at Winchester yesterday; but in a carriage and a quantity of people, ladies &c, and incapable of getting away for a minute. What was very interesting and somewhat sad to me, we visibly passed you and Allen with I think a Lady and child1 on the London road!—

Adieu, I am called off. In endless haste

Yours always /

T. Carlyle
