The editors wish to express their continued acknowledgment and gratitude to individuals and institutions mentioned in previous volumes. There are others whose help deserves special mention in connection with the present volumes, and even some whose assistance will be chiefly felt in those yet to come. They include the Curators of Carlyle's House, Chelsea, and Carlyle's Birthplace, Ecclefechan; and the National Trust and National Trust for Scotland, the National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh University Library, and many public libraries, including the Ewart Library, Dumfries, and the central libraries of Liverpool and Manchester. Since the last set of volumes appeared in 1990, special thanks are due to the University of Edinburgh Appeal at a time of particular difficulty, the American Friends of Edinburgh University, the Robert Lorimer Foundation, the Leverhulme Trust, the British Academy, Edinburgh University Faculty of Arts, Professors R. D. S. Jack and Ian Donaldson, Emeritus Professor David Daiches, Graham Storey, Deric Bolton, Eluned Brown, Mrs. Virginia Surtees, Dr. Owen Dudley Edwards, Jules Seigel, and David Sorensen. Many others remain necessarily unnamed, but not forgotten, who have helped to make the work possible. We are also glad of the participation of Dr. Bill Bell of Edinburgh in editing the present set, and welcome him as assistant editor in future volumes. Grateful thanks are also rendered to the National Endowment for the Humanities for supporting the publication of these volumes.
