The reverse of the MS has TC's note “To Part IV (latter portion of it),” which corresponds to the end of Works vol. 6; this means that the letter can be tentatively dated on the assumption that the printers were almost up to “Part IV” (in print 1:403); cf. TC to KAVE, 8 June. The MS is a full half sheet of instructions to Christie (some crossed out), specifying problems, with such comments as “Look if that is all correct” and “Try at the Museum. It is mentioned in Cromwelliana 1:36—.” The lines at the end printed here are a terse form of dated communication by letter.

1. TC's notes show that the letter was of 11 Nov. 1647; see Works 6:291–92. Christie's reply to TC, in his usual impeccable handwriting, is given on the reverse (FC E.48.6.24), on which also appears a scrawled “More copy please” in another hand. Though TC was helped by having the text of the Cromwell letters printed in galleys and then writing his “elucidations,” it was a dangerous way to put the work together.
