TC TO DR. POOLE

Edinburgh. [ca. 1 April 1822]

[This letter is listed in a Parke-Bernet sale catalogue for Tuesday, 19 Feb. 1963, item 39, and described as being 3¼ pages, 4to. It is summarized: “Carlyle replies to the criticisms of a Mr. Hodgkin1 on his article on Goethe's Faust (published in April [New] Edinburgh Review). He comments at length on Goethe and on his own studies of German literature; contrasts Mephistopheles and Byron's Don Juan, and analyzes Le Diable Boiteux.2 Tells Poole3 to make any changes in the article which he wishes; he is extremely busy and scarcely has time to reread the manuscript.”]
