TC TO HENRIETTA MARIA STANLEY
Chelsea, 22 April, 1847
Alas, dear Mrs Stanley, I grieve to say it is impossible! I am already engaged for the night before, and one dinner in the week (one in the month would answer better) is the utmost that poor human nature in my case can venture on.1— — Heaven, I suppose, will be a place where we do not dine at all; but see our friends in beautiful light and temper, without dyspepsia or headache following it!
Ever yours /
T. Carlyle
