TC TO HENRIETTA MARIA STANLEY
Chelsea, 23 April, 1847
O unreasonable Mrs Stanley!— If you ask me in that way, of course I must come, and if necessary die at my post! But do you know in the least what it is you are asking? Not you. Fancy a Coroner's Inquest, with verdict, Died by the visitation of &c!— Is the Bishop of Oxford1 worth seeing with a “tremendous sacrifice”? No; nor the whole Bench, all in their lawns,2 behind him. Phantasms, nearly obsolete; to whom no dinner should be given!—
On the whole, I will come, on Thursday; and then dine no more, for unlimited periods.
Yours ever truly /
