TC TO HENRIETTA MARIA STANLEY
Chelsea, 29 june, 1847—
Dear Mrs Stanley,
You are always very good; and I need not say how happy I should be, if— Woe betide that “if”! But the melancholy fact is, I cannot come. This week already I have a “splendid indigestion” to front, on the score of an immortal Statesman (Peel, your Corn-law friend, a man worth seeing, even at a late dinner); and in very deed, tho' you will not believe me, I am quite unwell, and my capacity for dining in any way has sunk to the mournfullest ebb!
Pity the poor white man,1—green man rather, for that is nearer his complexion;—and leave him to his mute Dialogue with the Fates, enlivened only by a little tobacco, till better days!— I am and remain
Yours always /
T. Carlyle
