TC TO LADY HARRIET BARING
Chelsea, 3 Augt, 1847—
I am lame since Sunday, and cannot move: a terrestrial Demon (one of many), named Lumbago, struck her fangs thro' me in a moment; and here I sit!
We were to go for Buxton on Thursday;1 but how it will be now I do not know. Possibly I may still recover in time; possibly not.
To Stanhope Street2 I clearly cannot come at present. Whether I shall see you again depends therefore on the favour of Heaven. Heaven, I believe, is favourable to those that can deserve it; but it is difficult, at times terribly difficult! Courage!
I will write to Stanhope Street at any rate;—and it to me in answer? For its bounty is without limit.3
Farewell, if I do not learn to stand on my feet! Yours evermore
T. C.
