Matlock Bath, 7 August, 1847

This is the strangest place I have ever seen; and, if the wretched canting Guidebooks and View-hunters would let one alone, one of the beautifullest. It seems quiet too, which is a far greater charm; offers a fine scope of woods, hillsides, and solitary high-lying paths; if we could succeed in getting fairly anchored, it might suit poor wearied creatures like us very well. As was said, we are to try it for a week. …
