5. Cheyne Row, Chelsea15 feby, 1848—

My dear Sir,

To satisfy myself on a small point of inquiry, not very important otherwise, I would gladly ascertain, To what Magazine of the year 1789 this stray leaf (entrusted me by a friend, to whom it is valuable) belongs?1 Perhaps you, who are in the middle of such things, could without great difficulty find out? Knowing your willingness to oblige, I will at least try.

“Nov. 1789,” incidentally noted on the margin, as you will observe, considerably restricts the boundaries of the search. I do not imagine it can be the Gentleman's Magazine;—nor indeed do I know how to guess at all.

Pray excuse this trouble; and be so kind, whether you succeed or not, as return me the leaf itself very soon, that I may restore it to its owner straightway.

Believe me / Yours very sincerely / Thomas Carlyle
