The allusion to “Lady Harriet” suggests an earlier date, as TC would probably refer to her in June as Lady Ashburton (the 1st Lord Ashburton having died in May). Emerson had met Lady Harriet sometime before 23 March: “Carlyle carried me to Lady Harriet Baring who is a very distinguished person” (Rusk 4:41). TC wrote in his Journal, 14 March: “Emerson here; with us on Sunday [12 March] to dinner: a great coterie, Wedgwood, Mrs Jameson, Milnes &c afterwards: very useless.” The invitation “to dine with us on Sunday” was probably for 12 March and this letter written on the previous Fri.
