Neuberg is unlikely to have been in London, 6 June, and then at home for John Carlyle's visit, 9 June (see TC to JAC, 8 [9] June, when TC writes “commend me to the excellent Neuberg”). So tentatively dated either at the time of Neuberg's visit in March (see Scudder vii), or in May (see TC to JN, 13 May). [To maintain the order established by the editors of the CL, this letter has been assigned a document date of 16 March 1849.]

2. Neuberg wrote to his sister, 14 March, that he had “spent a very pleasant evening at Carlyle's. His wife was out and I had him all to myself. We made tea together, and he told me many things that I desired to know. He was in a very good humour, and is the tenderest of mankind when one can look somewhat into the depths of his nature” (Sadler 281).
