1. See TC to LA, 26 April. On a MS, apparently on the subject of religion, a fragment of which is now at Yale, TC wrote: “A god invented language. The sum of long epochs is given to a God, sometimes even to a man: ‘Homer's’ Iliad. Can any mortal believe there was such a man as Homer? Homer is the sum of innumerable men (work this out!—it is worth something?)— (How comes it that I cannot take patience to ‘work things out’? That is it!)—” Then, after a space broken by a long dash, TC writes: “The means of exhibiting this of ‘Industrial regts’ in a state of action? (That shd be a work worth doing!
