JWC TO KATE STERLING

[10 February 1852]

Dearest Kate

Countess R1 has been here this morning, (“as yellow as gowans” poor little thing, from the state of her liver—such a bother we have with these livers) to ask what evening we would all come—Thursday Friday Saturday? Tell me can we?—make my respectful compliments to the Capt2 and say I will be obliged to him to let you come to me for the above mentioned purpose—and you can make me some telegraphic communication at the Conversazione tomorrow evening—or otherwise—

God be with us all

affectionate[ly] yours

“as well as can be expected”

Jane Welsh Carlyle
