JWC TO FRANK JEWSBURY

[ca. 10 July 1852]

Dear Frank

Mrs Newton has just been here all in tears to tell me she had found the whole thing out on Saturday night—that “the letters were to Nodes” that she has “had a dreadful quarrel with him and almost come to a separation” but now he seems to have bamboozled her again with lying excuses— You would have been heartily sorry for her had you seen her—and felt yourself sufficiently avenged— So now dont say any more to her like [a]1 good man—

I write in the greatest haste to catch the post— She came all thro the burning heat and horribly ashamed to justify you remem[ber]2

Yours /
