TC TO THOMAS ERSKINE
Chelsea, Wednesday / 21 july [1852]
Dear Mr Erskine,—I am off by Kidd,1 after all, this day, in 2 hours time,—in the most horrible bustle and universal hurly-burly (feeling it an act of “courage” to go now rather than later);—and so, unless something adverse befal, I expect to salute you at Linlathen, or perhaps on the Dundee Pier (in dreadfully disconsolate circumstances, I) on the evening the second day hence!— If I miss in the River here, and have to turn home again, you shall have that bad news tomorrow.
And so fair befal us2 every one!
Yours ever truly /
T. Carlyle
