TC TO RICHARD MONCKTON MILNES
Chelsea, 28 May, 1853—
Dear Milnes,
I believe the Chancellor of the Exchequer and you are right: we must take the boon with thankfulness; and hope that one day the Prussian Post, aided by the Spread-Eagle in Regents Circus1 will open a direct communication with the Antiquar Bookhandlers in foreign parts, and do all that is desired. Thanks and good speed to the brave Chancellor and you!—
Who is the Black Swan;2—or rather do not tell me who! I duck low; and wait till all this sooty deluge run by.
Yours ever truly /
T. Carlyle
