My dear Sir,
I have written on the back of your sheet the sum of all I knew about poor Hume; of whose death, and tragic post-obit concerns, I am truly sorry to hear.1 Poor innocent vain soul! I remember meeting him, for a minute, in the Regent's Circus, perhaps ten years ago; and I little thought this would be the next news of him.
You might come down and see us, some evening, for auld lang syne! I think I have a Book of yours (Political Songs, or some such title),2 which I will honestly return. To Mrs Cunningham your excellent Mother3 we send our very best regards, both of us; and beg of her to understand always that we would not be forgotten, nor will ever forget.
