1. Agostino Ruffini (1812–55; see TC to SHW, 16 March 1840), whom TC knew through Mazzini, died in poverty, 3 Jan., at Taggia.

2. Untraced. Presumably David Masson (1822–1907; ODNB), biographer and editor; friend of the Carlyles since the 1840s; he knew Ruffini; see Memories of Two Cities (Edinburgh, 1911), 120–45. Masson was in London at this time; Mazzini had dinner with him and others, 9 Feb.: “I like Masson very much”; he reported, 19 Feb., that “the Massons have established a definition of me quite new: ‘a reasonable animal fond of playing at cards and of sausages’” (Scritti 54:54, 70).
