Edinburgh 10th March 1824.

Gentlemen,

I beg leave to offer you the Publishing of my Translation of Goethe's Wilhelm Meister (which you are now engaged in Printing) on the following terms—

1st That this first Edition of 1000 Copies shall be entirely yours, in return for the sum of £180 to be paid me on the day of Publication, by your Bill at three months after date—

2d That I shall not have liberty to print a second Edition till the first is altogether sold— Nor till I have made you the offer specified in the next article, and which you are entitled to demand of me at any time—

3d That for the second Edition, I shall consider myself bound to offer it to you, at the rate of £250 per 1000 Copies; the number to be fixed by you, and the money to be paid as in the present instance—

4th That after this, the Copy-right of the work shall be mine—

If you agree to these terms be so good as tell me so in writing, & the bargain will be settled—
