4. Myddelton Terrace, Pentonville / Monday [12 July 1824]—

My dear Sir,

I have thoughts of publishing that Life of Schiller1 augmented with notes extracts &c in a separate shape; and being badly in want of materials for illustrating my subject, I make bold to apply to you for aid in the affair. Could you have the goodness to send me a list of any books (with notice where they may be found) that could serve me? I have seen only Doering's Life of Schiller,2 and Körner's;3 and Schillers works. I shall also solicit your mature criticism when you have perused the whole Article.4 May I expect to hear from you soon? I leave town this week.5

1. At the top of this letter Robinson has written: “Mr. Carlyle obtained great credit for the work here spoken of as about to be published.— It was translated into German under the auspices of the great Göthe: / —H. C. Robinson / June 1834.” Henry Crabb Robinson (1775–1867), British traveler, journalist, diarist, authority on German literature, and friend of many important men of letters, met Carlyle at Charles Lamb's, 5 July 1824, where Carlyle had been taken by Edward Irving. Irving had previously described Carlyle to Robinson as “a friend of mine who has translated Wilhelm Meister.” See D. A. Wilson's Carlyle, I, 339.

2. Johann Michael Heinrich Döring (1789–1862), Friedrich von Schillers Leben (Weimar, 1822). Döring is frequently quoted in Carlyle's Schiller.

3. Christian Gottfried Körner (1756–1831), jurist, literary critic, and friend of Schiller. His biography of Schiller is attached to the Stuttgart and Tübingen edition of Schiller's works, 12 vols. (1812–15).

4. The last installment of Carlyle's study of Schiller being published in the London Magazine would not appear until the September issue.

5. Carlyle left London for Birmingham on Sunday, 18 July. He had planned to leave on the day before, but there was not room for him on the coach.
