TC TO HENRY AUSTIN BRUCE

Chelsea, 12 April, 1856—

Dear Sir,

I am very proud to be thought worthy of such a Gift by Sir William Napier;1 I will certainly reserve this Book on Scinde2 for my very first holiday (or hour of right freedom from Prussian tyranny); and read it with the attention due to so distinguished a Record of a man whose valiant character and fine faculties I already so much honour. Please to make my thankful and respectful acknowledgements to Sir William for this mark of his goodness to me. Say I am greatly obliged; and shall expect pleasure and profit of no usual kind from this volume,—the high qualities of which (and a noble fraternal piety by way of finish to them) I am well enough prepared to anticipate.

Believe me, dear Sir, with many regards

Yours sincerely /

T. Carlyle
