TC TO JAMES CARLYLE

Chelsea, Tuesday Evg 22 july, 1856—

Dear Jamie,

If all go well, we are to be at Edinburgh tomorrow evening about 9 p.m. On Thursday, I now find, it will be better for me to go across the Frith with Jane, and see her fairly lodged with her Cousins at Auchtertool. That will throw me late for coming forward to you the same evening: so we will say Friday, the next day, for Scotsbrig. At 5 p.m. on Friday I will leave Edinburgh to come to you; and if you can be at the Ecclefechan Station that (Friday) evening, I hope you will find me to bring over with you.

Jack is here at this moment; and all is in great haste, packing &c &c. We hope this will still be in time, and give you clear Warning on Thursday morning. Next night, you have me, if all go as I expect—

Ever your Affecte Brother

T. Carlyle
