Chelsea, 3 March, 1857

Dear Milnes,

I wish you would come and ride with me some day; there is little other chance for me of seeing you at present. I called the other day to try if I could persuade you to such a thing; but found nobody.

I go out almost daily (very quiet neighbourly horse, and what rate of speed you like) at 3½ p.m.—but will shift the hour (especially farther on), will come to Ur Brook Street &c, if you insist on that method. Come, if you can!

Vita brevis, ars longa1—Ah me!

Yours ever /

T. Carlyle
