TC TO DAVID LAING
Chelsea, 23 March, 1857
My dear Sir,
A long time ago I lent you (I think, included in some little quarto Pamphlet as part of its contents) a Letter of mine to the Scotch Antiquaries about National Portrait-Collections.1 I want the thing now, to see whether it is worth reprinting; and shall be much obliged if you will send it back to me.— There is to be a “National Gallery of Portraits,”2 it seems; but I doubt it will be a long time first!
Yours always truly / T. Carlyle
